ISSA/INTERCLEAN® Innovation Award

Tennant Company’s Orbio Technologies Group Wins 2014 ISSA/INTERCLEAN® Innovation Award for os3 On-Site Generation (OSG) System

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 13, 2014—Tennant Company (NYSE: TNC), a world leader in designing, manufacturing and marketing solutions that help create a cleaner, safer, healthier world announced that its Orbio Technologies Group’s Orbio® os3 system was honored November 7 with the prestigious 2014 ISSA Innovation Award in the Dispensers category at the ISSA Excellence Awards Ceremony at the ISSA/INTERCLEAN® North America trade show in Orlando, Florida. Tennant Company was also a recognized recipient of the ISSA Member Milestones for their 40-year membership.

The Orbio® os3 system replaces conventional, multi-colored and fragranced daily-use chemicals with a multi-purpose cleaner and a one-step cleaner-disinfectant/sanitizer generated on site. Compact, affordable, simple—the os3 makes cleaning processes more efficient, streamlines training, and helps improve health and safety. It also decreases the environmental footprint associated with conventional packaged chemicals by reducing packaging and transportation.

“The os3 helps customers simplify their processes by replacing multiple cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing chemicals with two chemicals made at their facilities: a versatile multi-purpose cleaner and a solution that disinfects and sanitizes,” explained Karla Leis, Vice President and General Manager of Orbio Technologies Group. “Our customers appreciate the design of the system. It’s easy for operators to use, fits in most janitorial supply closets, and can be expanded throughout a facility with our unique os3 satellite system.”

“Orbio Technologies is proud of this award, which acknowledges our leadership role in the emerging OSG category. Our industry has recognized the game-changing innovation represented in the os3,” said Leis. “As the OSG product category grows, Orbio Technologies will continue to assist our customers and partners in realizing the many benefits that come with adopting the Orbio os3 and moving toward OSG, the inevitable future of cleaning,” added Leis.

ISSA Innovation Awards winners were selected by cleaning-industry distributors, wholesalers, building service contractors, and in-house service professionals who cast their votes for the most innovative products among 51 entries across five categories: Cleaning Agents, Dispensers, Equipment, Services and Technology, and Supplies.

Supply Chain Sustainability Tool

Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS) Tool

GEMI today announced the availability of a new Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS) Tool.

“This new GEMI supply chain sustainability tool was developed through a collaborative process by the GEMI Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS) Work Group, the University of Minnesota Northstar Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise (NiSE) and Climate Earth,” said Bill Gill, Assistant Vice President, Environmental Affairs, Smithfield Foods and the Chair of GEMI as well as GEMI’s SCS Work Group.  “The SCS tool has been designed as a guide to help support and assist with strategic sourcing and procurement by providing visibility into CO2e and water impacts within a financial context.  We believe it is the first tool to offer a portfolio view of the supply chain, enabling tradeoffs between impacts and across purchase categories,” he continued.  “The first three product categories for this tool are paperboard container manufacturing, plastic film and sheet manufacturing, and soap and cleaning compound manufacturing, and there is clearly an opportunity to expand that list,” Gill said.

“This first of its kind browser based tool allows a user to enter spending across purchase categories. SCS then calculates CO2e and water impacts and assesses alternative purchasing scenarios for each of the three featured categories,” said Dr. Timothy Smith, Associate Professor, University of Minnesota who co-lead tool development and created the underlying science based models informing the tool.  “Although many have talked about the need for organizations to coordinate environmental improvement opportunities across sourced inputs, this is the first time that a user based system has been developed to move the discussion into action,” he said.

“We are excited about this new tool because it will allow an organization to estimate results of multiple scenarios or combinations of scenarios helping companies engage and focus on their supply chains and design more sustainable strategies,” said Steve Hellem, GEMI’s Executive Director. “Our GEMI members recognize that a great deal of consumptive impacts of key environmental challenges such as CO2e and water are tied up within complex value chains,” said Hellem.  “Given a wide range of opportunities, the SCS tool can quickly quantify multiple scenarios, a key step in moving forward with a better understanding of options that procurement professionals have at their disposal to make business decisions that provide value to their organizations while at the same time improving the environment,” Hellem added.

Chris Erickson, CEO of Climate Earth and the creator of the platform for the SCS Tool said, “Climate Earth is pleased to be part of this new, innovative and first of its kind tool.  The platform has been designed to be a simple, scalable, open and interactive tool for procurement and supply chain managers to help them better understand priorities and measure performance of sourcing strategies.”

Gill concluded, “This is the most recent tool in a broad list of tools and solutions developed by GEMI whose member companies are global leaders in developing insights, networking, and creating collaborative sustainability solutions for business.”
