GEMI Summer Meeting – Water Stewardship

GEMI invites corporate environmental sustainability leaders to join us in Milwaukee this summer to engage in an interactive discussion on collaborative business solutions to water stewardship.

GEMI’s Summer Meeting on Water Stewardship will be hosted by Smithfield Foods at its Patrick Cudahy facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 8-9.

Wednesday, July 8

9:00am – 9:15am Welcome, Introduction and Antitrust Guidelines

  • Bill Gill, AVP Environmental Affairs, Smithfield Foods, GEMI’s 2015 Chair
9:15am – 10:15am Establishing Milwaukee as a World Water Hub

  • Dean Amhaus, President & CEO, The Water Council– Milwaukee numbers among the world’s most significant hubs for water research, education, technology development and industry.  Due to the work of The Water Council, a plethora of recent accomplishments have accelerated the region’s global impact and prestige.

10:30am – 12:00pm Round-table Discussion of GEMI Member Practices in Assessing Water Risks and OpportunitiesA round-table discussion regarding GEMI member companies’ experiences and results in applying water sustainability tools across their organizations.  Ashland, Gannett Fleming and Sealed Air will open the discussion by sharing their insights and experiences.

1:30pm – 2:00pm Lessons Learned in Partnering to Address Water EfficiencyLearn how EDF and AT&T teamed up to uncover water efficiency in buildings, and what they learned in the process.

2:00pm – 3:15pm Regional Case Studies in Building Partnerships to Enhance Water Stewardship

  • Brooke Barton, Senior Program Director, Water Program, Ceres– learn how Ceres is working together with companies to “connect the drops” between sustainable water supplies and the economic health of California.
  • Andrew Mangan, Executive Director, US BCSD – located in the New Orleans to Baton Rouge Mississippi River Corridor, the Louisiana Water Synergy Project has been launched as a pilot project to demonstrate the viability of the US BCSD collaborative work process when aimed at watershed issues

3:30pm – 4:45pm Innovation in Industrial Water ManagementSpeakers will discuss the value of water, and new innovations leading manufacturers are employing to reach their water stewardship goals.

9:15am – 10:15am Global Water Sustainability Trends – Managing Risks and Identifying Opportunities

  • William Sarni, Director and Practice Leader, Enterprise Water Strategy, Deloitte Consulting LLP — Will has provided sustainability, environmental and hydrogeological consulting services to private and public-sector enterprises for more than three decades, with a focus on developing and implementing corporate-wide sustainability and water stewardship strategies.

  • Emilio Tenuta, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, Ecolab – The Water Risk Monetizer is a publicly available online tool that provides actionable information to help businesses around the world understand the impact of water scarcity to their business and quantify those risks in financial terms to inform decisions that enable growth.

12:00pm – 1:30pm Breakout Session: Collaborative Business Solutions to Water Stewardship ChallengesFacilitated by: Stan Mierzejewski, Senior Manager Sustainability, Tennant, GEMI’s Tools Chair

In breakout groups, participants will engage with fellow corporate sustainability leaders addressing water stewardship in their organizations to share common processes / approaches, identify gaps, and discuss opportunities to collaborate to develop business solutions to water stewardship challenges.
